Samples of the translation were tested for clarity and ease of reading with pastors, students, scholars, and lay people across the full breadth of the intended audience. Each edited text was then submitted to a general committee of eight to twelve members before being distributed to selected outside critics and to all members of the CBT in preparation for a final review. The initial translations produced by these teams were carefully scrutinized and revised by intermediate editorial committees of five biblical scholars to check them against the source texts and assess them for comprehensibility. The translation of each book was assigned to translation teams, each made up of two lead translators, two translation consultants, and a stylistic consultant where necessary. Their conclusion was endorsed by a large number of church leaders who met in Chicago in 1966.Ī self-governing body of fifteen biblical scholars, the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT) was formed and charged with responsibility for the version, and in 1968 the New York Bible Society (which subsequently became the International Bible Society and then Biblica) generously undertook the financial sponsorship of the project. And finally, in 1965, after several years of preparatory study, a trans-denominational and international group of scholars met in Palos Heights, Illinois, and agreed to begin work on the project – determining to not simply adapt an existing English version of the Bible but to start from scratch with the best available manuscripts in the original languages. The passion of one man became the passion of a church, and ultimately the passion of a whole group of denominations. Long saw the need for a translation that captured the truths he loved in the language that his contemporaries spoke.įor 10 years, Long and a growing group of like-minded supporters drove this idea. Long was a lifelong devotee of the King James Version, but when he shared it with his friends he was distressed to find that it just didn’t connect. The initial vision for the project was provided by a single individual – an engineer working with General Electric in Seattle by the name of Howard Long. The Amplified Bible Classic Edition (AMPC) present on Bible Gateway matches the 1987 printing.The New International Version (NIV) is a completely original translation of the Bible developed by more than one hundred scholars working from the best available Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts. In completing the Amplified Bible, translators made a determined effort to keep, as far as possible, the familiar wording of the earlier versions, and especially the feeling of the ancient Book. The Septuagint and other versions were compared for interpretation of textual differences. Cognate languages, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and other Greek works were also consulted. The AMP is based on the American Standard Version of 1901, Rudolph Kittel’s Biblia Hebraica, the Greek text of Westcott and Hort, and the 23rd edition of the Nestle Greek New Testament as well as the best Hebrew and Greek lexicons available at the time. Multiple English word equivalents to each key Hebrew and Greek word clarify and amplify meanings that may otherwise have been concealed by the traditional translation method. The AMP does this through the use of explanatory alternate readings and amplifications to assist the reader in understanding what Scripture really says. Its goal was to take both word meaning and context into account to accurately translate the original text from one language into another.
The AMP was the first Bible project of The Lockman Foundation.
The same feel and style of amplification has been maintained, so that those who read the classic Amplified Bible will be able to easily transition to the new text. Additionally, the Bible text has been improved to read smoothly with or without amplifications, so that the text may be read either way. The Amplified Bible of 2015 includes more amplification in the Old Testament and refined amplification in the New Testament. The result is an Amplified Bible that is easier to read and better than ever to study and understand.

For this update to the Amplified Bible (AMP), the goal of the translation team was to enhance the appeal of the Amplified Bible by refreshing the English and refining the amplifications for relevance and clarity.
